Singular Vision is an exciting set of contemporary big band recordings by the award-winning Washington State University Jazz Big Band directed by Greg Yasinitsky.
Singular Vision features recordings by the WSU Jazz Big Bands of 2013-14 and 2014-15. These ensembles received top honors at the 2014 and 2015 Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festivals, and the 2014-15 Jazz Big Band presented an invited performance at the 2015 international conference of the Jazz Education Network where the band performed with Grammy Award winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin and received a standing ovation.
Soloists include trumpeter and flugelhorn artist Brian Ploeger, an alumnus of the Maynard Ferguson Band and winner of a 2015 Outstanding Graduate College Soloist Award from DownBeat magazine, and tenor saxophonist Machado Mijiga, a multi-year soloist award winner at the Lionel Hampton Festival.
The program includes Apollo’s Reel, a commission from Northwest composer and trombonist Tom Molter, and Blue Variety, composed and conducted by Brian Ward, WSU Coordinator of Jazz Studies. The other selections are recent compositions by the Jazz Big Band’s director, Greg Yasinitsky, Director of the WSU School of Music, including The Real Deal, commissioned by J.W. Pepper in honor of Northwest educator Leo Dodd; Missing You, commissioned by the University of Arkansas Jazz Band; and Singular Vision, commissioned by the Sound Alliance at Brigham Young University, Idaho.
